The expansion-minded folks at Shake Shack are at it again: The burger mecca has announced plans to open two new locations in the DC metropolitan area by mid 2014, adding to the three already open. As previously rumored, one location will be located at DC's bustling Union Station. The second location will be "a stand-alone Shack on an elevated plaza" in Tysons Corner, in between the Northern Virginia suburbs of McLean and Vienna. Both locations should feature the new fresh-cut fries, but there's no word yet as to specialty concretes. Below, the press release:
SHAKE SHACK TO OPEN TWO NEW DC AREA LOCATIONS IN MID 2014Beloved Burger, Hot Dog and Frozen Custard Stand Deepens Ties to Greater Washington Metro Area with Shacks in Union Station and Tysons Corner
NEW YORK, NY - September 6, 2013 - Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG) is proud to announce it will deepen its ties to the Washington, DC metropolitan area when it bringsShake Shack® locations to Union Station - Washington, DC and Tysons Corner in Northern Virginia. Both Shacks are slated to open in mid 2014.
Shake Shack is a critically acclaimed, modern day "roadside" burger stand known for its 100% all-natural Angus beef burgers, delicious flat-top dogs, fresh-made frozen custard, craft beer and wine, and more. A fun and lively community gathering place with widespread appeal, Shake Shack has earned a cult-like following in DC and around the world.
"Both of these spots are a natural fit for us," said Randy Garutti, Shake Shack CEO. "Being in Union Station places us in a truly historic building that's also a central transportation hub for DC locals and visitors. Tysons Corner takes us beyond DC to an ever-expanding, thriving community in Northern Virginia, where we can build a Shack from the ground up."
Prominently located in the vibrant Capitol Hill neighborhood, Shake Shack Union Station will be in the original West Hall of the restored and revitalized landmark building, which dates back to 1907. Modeled in the monumental Beaux-Arts style, Union Station is now one of the largest and busiest multi-modal transportation hubs in the United States serving AMTRAK, regional commuter trains and the Washington Metro. With more than 90,000 visitors passing through its historic halls daily, Union Station is also a thriving retail center and frequently hosts major cultural and civic events.
Shake Shack Tysons Corner will be located in the heart of Northern Virginia, between the community of McLean and the town of Vienna, along the Capital Beltway (Interstate 495). It will be a stand-alone Shack on an elevated plaza with lush green spaces and gardens, and situated next to the Tysons Corner Center mall. The area is quickly becoming a focal point for Greater DC with new residential and office towers, a luxury hotel, and ample shopping and dining options. The Shack will be within walking distance to the newly expanded Washington Metro Silver Line, connecting Tysons, Reston, Herndon, and the Dulles Airport areas.
