Keizo Shimamoto's line-inducing ramen burger is en route to Los Angeles like right this second, but a San Diego ramen chef is unleashing a whole menu of "California Ramen Burgers" with ramen-noodle buns. Chef Junya Watanabe's Rakiraki Ramen — one of the hottest ramen shops of 2013 — is now offering three varieties of the novelty hamburger, with its "signature" burger featuring ground chicken with shiitake and kikurage mushroom, chicken soft bone, and shiso leaf (among other ingredients), topped with avocado. What makes the creation especially "California?" The ramen buns are wrapped in lettuce.
It's unclear if Watanabe's versions will draw lines, but unlike the original Smorgasburg version, the spot does offer something for vegetarians: a veggie ramen burger featuring a roasted corn, black bean, and roasted pepper patty.
