The Top Chef spinoff vortex continues to swirl as Bravo announces "Padma's Picks," an internet "prequel" (sorry) to the upcoming Top Chef season set in New Orleans. According to the LA Times, the six-episode series features shushing host Padma Lakshmi running around New Orleans (except she calls it The Big Easy obviously) pitting sous chefs and the like against one another for a chance to compete on the actual show. It premieres August 14 on Bravo's website.
This is just one of many online spinoffs of Top Chef Bravo has introduced in recent years, including the Emmy-nominated (yes) "Last Chance Kitchen" on regular Top Chef and "Battle of the Sous Chefs" on the currently airing season of Top Chef Masters.
The premise of this online show is interesting, especially considering the fact that Top Chef was criticized for its complete lack of Seattle contestants — there were zero — during the season that was set in that city. (Austin resident Paul Qui won the season before that, which was set in Texas.) Padma's Picks ensures a New Orleans chef on the show, in any case. Here's a preview of Padma's Picks:
