Graham Elliot Shutters Grahamwich in Chicago

Hillary Dixler Canavan is Eater's restaurant editor and the author of the publication's debut book, Eater: 100 Essential Restaurant Recipes From the Authority on Where to Eat and Why It Matters (Abrams, September 2023). Her work focuses on dining trends and the people changing the industry — and scouting the next hot restaurant you need to try on Eater's annual Best New Restaurant list.

Chef Graham Elliot has closed his Chicago sandwich shop Grahamwich. According to the Chicago Tribune, the restaurant "quietly closed its doors" yesterday, their last service having been at the Lollopalooza festival, where Elliot is the culinary director. Grahamwich opened in 2010, its opening quickly followed by talks of expansion.

The reasons for the closure are unclear. In a statement quoted by the Tribune, Elliot simply says "Ladies and gentlemen, Grahamwich has left the building" and that he "look[s] forward to getting the band back together sometime in the future." Eater Chicago reached out to Elliot's director of operations who shed no further light on why the restaurant is closing, explaining: "We are in no comment world right now." Elliot's other Chicago restaurants Graham Elliot and Graham Elliot Bistro are still open, and the Grahamwich website now directs to these two restaurants.
