Today in Cronut Mania: Bourdain, Seinfeld, and More

Photos: Eater.com; Parts Unknown / Facebook

Although the hybrid croissant-doughnut debuted more than two months ago, Cronut Mania is still very much in full swing. This week's smattering of in-your-face cronutness includes comedian Jerry Seinfeld enjoying Cronuts with his family, Anthony Bourdain prepping to get intellectual with Cronuts, and Cronut-inspired entrepreneurialism. Here's what's new in the world of SoHo's Dominique Ansel Bakery and Cronut Mania:

Seinfelds Eating Cronuts

Cookbook author Jessica Seinfeld posted a video on Vine of her very famous husband comedianJerry Seinfeld and their son eating Cronuts on what appears to be a New York City apartment balcony. Based on the yellow frosting color, it appears that the Seinfelds are eating the Lemon-Maple flavor that Dominique Ansel Bakery served in June.

Cronut Line, Profiled

The Financial Times' Natalie Whittle got up early and wrote about her experiences braving the Cronut line. She finds the assembled group cheerful and full of "sunny cronut-will-cure-all optimism." Among those in line are sisters who have tried four times to get a Cronut and a man from Hawaii who added a day to his New York City itinerary just to wait in line. While she was waiting, a bakery staff member offered fresh-baked madeleines to the hungry people on line.

Cronut scalping and shameless copying might be old tricks, but here's a new way for people who are not Dominique Ansel to make money from the Cronut craze: Advertise to people waiting on the still-epic line. Forbes reports that a "food truck-like vehicle" has popped up across the street from the bakery offering space on the side of the truck for advertisers reaching to target Cronut seekers. The sign on the side of the truck says: "CATCH THE CRONUT CRAZE ADVERTISE ON THIS TRUCK." The director of Good Days Marketing, which owns the truck, explains the idea: "I was going for a run and saw the lines and said, hey, there's got to be an opportunity to make some money off this." Indeed.

Bourdain to Bring Cronuts to CNN

Parts Unknown host Anthony Bourdain tweeted that he will discussing Cronuts when he guest-hosts Piers Morgan Live this Thursday on CNN. Joining him in conversation will be chef Mario Batali, chef/Cronut enthusiast Eric Ripert, and New York Times media and culture columnist David Carr. Confirmation from inside the cronutdome is that Dominique Ansel will be on the air as well. The plan is to do a DKA vs Cronut taste off.
