PALO ALTO — Starting today until Sunday, tech-savvy creative people will team up with food industry folks and entrepreneurs to develop prototypes to solve issues in sustainable meat production and consumption at Hack//Meat Silicon Valley. Submissions will be judged by a food/meat-obsessed panel consisting of chef Chris Cosentino (Incanto), Bill and Nicolette Niman (Niman Ranch & BN Ranch), and Anya Fernald (Belcampo Meat Co.), among others. To drive the whole sustainable meat idea home, Ryan Farr of San Francisco's 4505 Meats will be performing a butchery demo at some point. [Eaterwire]
WISCONSIN — In August, former cheftestapants Harold Dieterle, Fabio Viviani and RIchard Blais are making a pit stop at the Lake of the Torches Resort Casino in Lac du Flambeau. They're there to make special food (each one is creating a "specially prepared menu") for the lunch and dinner buffets at the newly remodeled Eagle's Nest Restaurant. [Successful Meetings]
EVERYWHERE — Book publishing company Phaidon is having a 24-hour flash sale, and there are some pretty good cookbooks in the mix. We spotted the kind of old but good emerging chef cookbook Coco for 75 percent off. The more recent Ferran Adrià title The Family Meal as well as cookbooks from Noma, Fäviken and Mugaritz were 30 percent off. [Official]
CHICAGO — Eleven Madison Park alum chef Lee Wolen has finally taken the helm at The Lobby in the city's Peninsula hotel, and he's getting himself acquainted by collaborating with some local chefs on a monthly dinner series. The first of the dinners, with GT Fish & Oyster chef Giuseppe Tentori, takes place July 8. The following events will feature chefs Andrew Zimmerman (Sepia), Ryan Poli (Tavernita, Little Market Brasserie) and Tony Mantuano (Spiaggia). Eater Chicago has the details. [-ECHI-]
