Hillary Dixler Canavan is Eater's restaurant editor and the author of the publication's debut book, Eater: 100 Essential Restaurant Recipes From the Authority on Where to Eat and Why It Matters (Abrams, September 2023). Her work focuses on dining trends and the people changing the industry — and scouting the next hot restaurant you need to try on Eater's annual Best New Restaurant list.

Looks like little has changed following last week's "Grand Re-Opening" of Amy's Baking Company: On Friday, a reporter for the Phoenix Business Journal dined at the restaurant — now infamous for its Facebook freakout following a terrible showing on Kitchen Nightmares — and she and her party were kicked out by co-owner Samy Bouzaglo himself.

According reporter Hayley Ringle, she and the rest of her party incurred Samy's notorious wrath when they complained of fruit flies in their cocktails not once but three times. (Ringle shares photos of the bugs in her article). Samy, who fielded their complaints, kicked them out of the restaurant when the group pointed out the flies in the restaurant's third, failed attempt to make a clean cocktail. Perhaps he was just stressed by his deportation hearings?

Ringle also points out that the restaurant was surprisingly empty. She and her group ended up at neighboring restaurant Pita Jungle, which apparently is "super busy and very friendly." She notes that the restaurant is a good option for people "that can't eat at Amy's, or who wal[k] by with curiosity hoping to get a glimpse of Amy or Samy." No word yet on whether Samy and wife Amy will add the Phoenix Business Journal to their list of bullies.
