May certainly is shaping up to be a busy month for food events around the world. Restaurants share top billing with big-name musicians at festivals such Napa's BottleRock, Brooklyn's Great GoogaMooga, and DC's Sweetlife Festival. And there's a lot happening on the literary front, too. In fact, the month kicks off with the Food Book Fair in Brooklyn and the Ballymaloe Literary Festival of Food and Wine in County Cork, Ireland. Beyond that, there's also the well-regarded Mesamérica gastronomic conference, a celebration of Southern food at the Atlanta Food & Wine Festival, and a street food jamboree at Singapore's World Street Food Congress. Food Book Fair
When: May 3 - May 5, 2013
Where: Brooklyn, NY
What: Over the course of three days, food writers, chefs, designers and more will descend on Brooklyn in honor of the written word. Participants include Nate Appleman, Marion Nestle, Oliver Strand, and Swallow Magazine, plus cookbooks and publications from Hugh Acheson, Cook It Raw, Daniel Humm and Will Guidara, and Nancy Singleton. There will also be a resource fair for small food start-ups and Foodieodicals, "[a]n exposition of international food magazines, journals and periodicals from all over the world."
Ballymaloe Literary Festival of Food and Wine
When: May 3 - May 6, 2013
Where: County Cork, Ireland
What: A pretty impressive lineup of chefs and other assorted food personalities are headed to East Cork for the Ballymaloe Literary Festival of Food and Wine at the Ballymaloe House and Ballymaloe Cookery School. Speakers include Alice Waters, White House pastry chef Bill Yosses, Noma co-owner Claus Meyer, the Nordic Food Lab's Ben Reade, food writer David Tanis, fermentation genius Sandor Katz and many more. There are going to be plenty of demos, book readings, and conversations about things like the Nordic food revolution and the evolution of food writing.
BottleRock
When: May 9 - May 12, 2013
Where: Napa, CA
What: BottleRock is much more than just a food festival: It's also a music festival, wine festival, and comedy festival. Napa area restaurants are providing the food, including La Condesa, Morimoto and a bunch of Napa Valley food trucks. Napa wineries are naturally involved as well, while musical acts include The Black Keys, The Avett Brothers, Cake, Violent Femmes, Blues Traveler, Mavis Staples and more. Comedians include the likes of Jim Gaffigan, Kristen Schaal, and Wyatt Cenac.
Vegas Uncork'd
When: May 9 - May 12, 2013
Where: Las Vegas, Nevada
What: Bon Appétit Magazine's annual Vegas blowout returns with the reliably fun grand poolside tasting, plus master tastings with Francois Payard, Guy Savoy, Nobu Matsuhisa, Gordon Ramsay, and more. Joel Robuchon is hosting a six-course "When in France" dinner, while Alain Ducasse ends the weekend with a brunch at miX.
Food Film Festival
When: May 10 - May 11, 2013
Where: Charleston, SC
What: The Food Film Festival kicks off in Charleston this month before heading to New York and Chicago later in the year. All manner of food-related films will be screened, including a documentary about Canadian maple farming titled Sugar Shack, and plenty of food porn shorts. Eater Charleston notes that "the fare highlighted in the movies shown will be served during and after the flicks" such as a ramen demo that will follow a screening of Ramen Dreams.
Sweetlife Festival
When: May 11, 2013
Where: Columbia, MD
What: Rapidly expanding DC-based salad entrepreneurs Sweetgreen are launching their fourth annual Sweetlife Festival at Merriweather Post Pavilion this month with a food lineup as serious as the musical lineup. José Andrés' food truck Pepe will be there, as well as food offerings from Toki Underground's Erik Bruner-Yang and Woodberry Kitchen's Spike Gjerde. There are going to be entire sections dedicated to food trucks, Chesapeake Bay staples, and a sandwich tent curated by Serious Eats. The musical lineup includes Phoenix, Passion Pit, Kendrick Lamar, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and more.
Great GoogaMooga
When: May 17 - May 19, 2013
Where: Brooklyn, NY
What: Returning for a second year (and hopefully with fewer hitches), the Great GoogaMooga is storming Brooklyn's Prospect Park with a killer lineup of food and music. Vendors include Big Gay Ice Cream, Eataly, Momofuku Milk Bar, Pat LaFrieda, The Meatball Shop, Umami Burger and more, while musical acts include the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Flaming Lips and The Darkness. The Restaurant at Meadowood's Christopher Kostow is doing a special three-course ticketed dinner, while Dirt Candy's Amanda Cohen is hosting a literary event "about cooking, sex, food porn, lady chefs, and where they all intersect."
Mesamérica

Where: Mexico City, Mexico
What: Enrique Olvera's Mésamerica Festival returns for a second year with a lineup of chefs that includes René Redzepi, Alex Atala, David Kinch, Andoni Luis Aduriz, Jorge Vallejo, Elena Reygadas, and Daniel Humm and Will Guidara. The festival's aim is to promote Mexican cuisine in a conversation among those at the forefront of global gastronomy.
Cook it Raw: David Chang & Friends
When: May 22, 2013
Where: New York, NY
What: To celebrate the release of the Cook it Raw book, Momofuku's David Chang is hosting an evening at the New York Public Library to discuss the Cook it Raw experience. Chefs Massimo Bottura (Osteria Francesca) and Daniel Patterson (Coi) will be there, as well as Cook it Raw founder Alessandro Porcelli. Madrid-based journalist Lisa Abend will moderate the discussion.
Atlanta Food & Wine Festival
When: May 30 - June 2, 2013
Where: Atlanta, GA
What: Atlanta's iteration of Food & Wine festival brings in chefs from throughout the South to celebrate the region's culinary heritage from Florida to Maryland. The event's advisory council includes the likes of Ford Fry, Linton Hopkins, Edward Lee, Julian Van Winkle, John Besh, John Currence, Andrea Reusing, Ashley Christenson, and Sean Brock.
World Street Food Congress
When: May 31 - June 9, 2013
Where: Singapore
What: Singapore is going to see 10 straight days of celebrating international street food as the World Street Food Congress launches on May 31. Not only will there be a jamboree featuring street foods from countries all over the world throughout the 10-day period, but there will also be an awards ceremony for categories such as the best street food city and the best street food writer. From June 3-4, folks such as Anthony Bourdain, Claus Meyer, James Oseland, Brett Burmeister, Johnny Chan and Pauline Loh will participate in the World Street Food Dialogue.
Aspen Food & Wine Classic

What: As usual, a number of headliner names are stopping into Aspen this summer for the annual Food & Wine Classic. Expect to see José Andrés talking about (and possibly to) oysters, Top Chef challenges with Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons, cooking demos with Jacques Pépin, plus conversations with panelists like Mario Batali, Rick Bayless, Danny Meyer and others.
Huichica Music Festival

Where: Sonoma, CA
What: California wine country gets another music and food festival with the Huichica Music Festival in June. Located at Sonoma's Gundlach Bundschu Winery, this festival pairs music from the likes of Blitzen Trapper, Fruit Bats and Jonathan Wilson with food from Portland's Bunk Sandwiches, San Francisco's Salumeria and more.
