On Friday night's episode of Kitchen Nightmares, shouty chef Gordon Ramsay quit for the first time ever in the show's 82-episode history. Amy and Samy Bouzaglo — owners of Amy's Baking Company in Scottsdale, Arizona — blamed everyone for their troubles, including "haters" and "bloggers," but not themselves. The owners did not give service staff tips (pocketing the money instead) and admitted to having fired over 100 employees. Said Ramsay: "After about 100 Kitchen Nightmares, I met two owners I could not help, it is because they are incapable of listening."
Update 05/14: Amy's Baking Company completely freaked out on Facebook, going after "the Yelpers and Reddits [sic]" and their "WITCH HUNT," calling them "trash," "pathetic," and "OPRESSORS [sic]."
Update 05/15: Now they are claiming that their Facebook was hacked.
Two clips: 1. the restaurant owners swearing and physically threatening diners, and 2. Gordon Ramsay delivering a brutal takedown of the owners:
First up: a clip from before Ramsay even showed up. While shooting b-roll the night before, owner Samy Bouzaglo threatened a diner who dared to complain about the hour-plus wait for a pizza. It got so bad that one of the show's producers had to jump in (this rarely ever happens on Kitchen Nightmares). But watch the Bouzaglos absolutely freak the fuck out. They chase the diners outside, yelling pleasantries like, "Fuck you! You piece of shit!" and "You little pansy, get out of here don't you ever come back here!"
Kitchen Nightmares might be full of total fakery, but apparently this was not the case here. The New Times actually talked to the diner who said, "The producers told me they had never seen anything like this." It turns out police did in fact show up to the restaurant because there was a 911 hangup call.
Later, Ramsay finally shows up to watch a disastrous dinner service full of yelling and swearing (not by Ramsay). Tons of food gets sent back, a waiter gets fired. A standard night at Amy's Baking Company. The next morning, Ramsay sits down with the owners who "want to clarify a few things." And by "clarify" they meant they wanted to quit the show. No one quits on Ramsay though, and he breaks up with them first. Ramsay quietly delivers a crushing verbal beatdown:
I can't help people that can't help themselves and cannot ever take one ounce of criticism. If you're not willing to change, I'm not going to butt heads, argue, scream... but this is not normal. And it's not normal for a restaurant to go through that many staff, it's not normal for a kitchen that small to have 65 items on the menu, and it's not normal for the level of animosity that you've built inside this restaurant and outside. You have the right to run the business the way you want to run your business. I have the right to do the right thing. And the right thing for me is to get out of here.
And now for the blowback: If it's any metric, the restaurant has 1 1/2 stars on Yelp. And since the show aired, tons of 1-star reviews have been written, including charming advice like, "Amy is PSYCHO.... you are evil..... get help! I see the wild crazy in your eyes."
Even worse than Yelpers, the Bouzaglos tell KSAZ that they've been receiving death threats. They also claim that "they don't yell at customers" and "it was all sensationalized." Amy's Baking Company remains open.
