Hillary Dixler Canavan is Eater's restaurant editor and the author of the publication's debut book, Eater: 100 Essential Restaurant Recipes From the Authority on Where to Eat and Why It Matters (Abrams, September 2023). Her work focuses on dining trends and the people changing the industry — and scouting the next hot restaurant you need to try on Eater's annual Best New Restaurant list.

Attention, gumbo-seeking gun owners. At The Cajun Experience in Leesburg, Virginia, customers who bring a gun can get 10% off on Open Carry Wednesday. In an interview with ABC7, restaurant owner Bryan Crosswhite explains his thinking: "Why can't I promote my business as a gun-friendly place that people come in and are law-abiding citizens who chose to participate in the second amendment." Customers seem to be responding positively. ABC7 reports "customers attending Open Carry night say the embrace is a nice change from the exclusion they've felt following recent mass murders."

The Cajun Experience isn't the first Virginia restaurant to appeal to gun owners in search of a good value. All Around Pizza in Virginia Beach offers 15% off to gun owners who show their gun or their concealed weapons permit to the owner. This past February, a group of Virginia gun owners showed their support for weapons and and dark—or maybe mellow blonde— roast at "Gun Owners Support Starbucks Day." Below, the local news report.
