The Hong Kong half of Sotheby's elBulli auction took place earlier today, and an evening for four with chef Ferran Adrià went for a whopping 220,500 HKD (about $28,406; all prices here include buyer's premium). The evening includes a "conversation around gastronomy" with Adrià at the famed elBulliTaller followed by dinner at Albert Adrià's Barcelona restaurant Tickets. That is a lot of money for dinner and a chat.
Other high number lots included a set of elBulli-engraved steak knives that sold for 73,500 HKD ($9,468) and "a unique collection of handmade artisanal plates that became prototypes in the world of gastronomy" that sold for 23,275 HKD ($2,998). According to Reuters, 82% of the wine lots from the auction sold for more than Sotheby's high estimate, and one anonymous Hong Kong businessman bought a wine lot for $59,000.
Another elBulli auction will be held at Sotheby's in New York City April 26. All the proceeds from the auction will go to the elBulliFoundation, set to launch in early 2015.
