Hillary Dixler Canavan is Eater's restaurant editor and the author of the publication's debut book, Eater: 100 Essential Restaurant Recipes From the Authority on Where to Eat and Why It Matters (Abrams, September 2023). Her work focuses on dining trends and the people changing the industry — and scouting the next hot restaurant you need to try on Eater's annual Best New Restaurant list.

Here's a teaser for San Francisco chef Daniel Patterson's first cookbook, which shares a name with his restaurant Coi. In the video, Patterson picks winter herbs, garnishes a dish using tweezers, talks cooking philosophy, and explains the origins of the name Coi. Patterson explains that, for him, "cooking is an expression of emotion" and sometimes is an easier way to connect with others than using words.

The book will have words, though, which Patterson hopes will foster connections with his readers. "I understand that a book that documents a restaurant is a very good promotional tool, but it wasn't interesting to me, because I didn't think that was the way I could get at something truthful or useful for people. When someone picks it up, my hope is that they will find themselves in the book, somewhere." Coi: Stories and Recipes will be published by Phaidon and will be released before the end of October 2013. Head to the Phaidon website to pre-order the book and to check out the cover. Below, the thoughtful preview.
