Hillary Dixler Canavan is Eater's restaurant editor and the author of the publication's debut book, Eater: 100 Essential Restaurant Recipes From the Authority on Where to Eat and Why It Matters (Abrams, September 2023). Her work focuses on dining trends and the people changing the industry — and scouting the next hot restaurant you need to try on Eater's annual Best New Restaurant list.

Here's an end of days twist on the reality cooking competition. According to a casting call by Schweet Entertainment (Alpha Dogs), MacGyver-like chefs on the new show will "face-off in POST-APOCALYPTIC cooking challenge scenarios." Reading between the lines, the show will probably be more Survivor than Magnus Nillson/Lucky Peach Frankenchicken.

Would-be participants will be asked to demonstrate whether they can "take a few cans of food, a box of jello, a jar of beans, a car windshield to fashion a solar cooker, and create something unexpectedly delicious." A companion casting call explains that a "Survivalist Expert" will host the show, teaching the "restaurant chefs ... creative ways of finding food and water sources in post-apocalyptic scenarios." The show will be airing on a "Major Cable Network;" the casting call does not confirm which.
