Beloved Bay Area chef Alice Waters is now on the scene at her iconic Berkeley restaurant Chez Panisse following this morning's reports of a damaging fire. KRON 4 has video of an emotional Waters telling reporters this morning that, "It's really important that we rebuild. ... It's just a matter of us rebuilding the hallway to the upstairs, but I can see that the upstairs could open very soon if we find some way to camouflage the front of the building." Waters also said she's sure Chez Panisse will have the support of the insurance companies, and she notes that she's already considering extending the dining room in the rebuild.
Beyond that, though, Waters admits that she's feeling a little shaky, "but I'm just glad no one was in the building. It's really amazing. ... That's a great relief that in the middle of the night that this happened. It really focuses all your attention on what's important. I guess I have to pay attention to my home right now."
