Hillary Dixler Canavan is Eater's restaurant editor and the author of the publication's debut book, Eater: 100 Essential Restaurant Recipes From the Authority on Where to Eat and Why It Matters (Abrams, September 2023). Her work focuses on dining trends and the people changing the industry — and scouting the next hot restaurant you need to try on Eater's annual Best New Restaurant list.

And the mystery tipper TipsForJesus strikes again. Eater NY confirms that the anonymous tipper — who has left thousands of dollars in tips across the country — did indeed tip big to the tune of $3,500 at the Lincoln Center location of The Smith in NYC last night, posting the above photo to the @TipsForJesus Instagram account. This is the first time TipsForJesus has posted from the East Coast.

Last night TipsForJesus also posted a photo of a receipt from a resort in Punta Mita, Mexico. Since it's impossible to be in two places at once, the Mexico receipt suggests that TipsForJesus is in fact a group effort, not the work of one person. Internet rumors identify former PayPal VP Jack Selby as the big tipper, but it seems that even if true, that's not the whole story. Recent stops have included Phoenix, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco, and TipsForJesus also takes credit for a spree of big tips left Ogden, Utah area restaurants back in August. The TipsForJesus itinerary continues to be unpredictable, so if you spot the mega-tipper you know what to do.
