Hillary Dixler Canavan is Eater's restaurant editor and the author of the publication's debut book, Eater: 100 Essential Restaurant Recipes From the Authority on Where to Eat and Why It Matters (Abrams, September 2023). Her work focuses on dining trends and the people changing the industry — and scouting the next hot restaurant you need to try on Eater's annual Best New Restaurant list.

Here's an outside-the-box business decision: Stupid Good Coffee in Dallas has announced that they are now accepting Starbucks gift cards. Owner Daniel Harmon tells Eater Dallas that he has decided to take the country's go-to stocking stuffer as payment in his shop because "Sometimes I'll see regular customers in the hallway clutching a Starbucks cup ... And a lot of the times they'll say, 'Well, somebody gave me a gift card!'"

Harmon's goal with the promotion is simple: get people into his shop instead of the Starbucks located a floor below. He notes that the promotion is "not really advantageous for us in a long-term sense," considering that he will basically be giving away his coffee to anyone who has a Starbucks card. Still, he thinks it will "really get [the shop's] name out there" and hopes that people will realize "there's other options" when it comes to getting their morning caffeine fix.
