Actor and restaurant investor Robert De Niro is among the backers for an upcoming 850,000-square-foot complex in central Shanghai, featuring a five-star boutique hotel, a performing arts center, retail space, and according to a press release, "multiple restaurants led by accomplished restaurateurs currently operating distinguished establishments in the United States."

De Niro's Tribeca Enterprises will team with BD Hotels, among others, to launch Project 179, which will take over four buildings in Shanghai's Bund district (and build a fifth in "classic 1920's Shanghai" style). No chefs have been linked with the project yet, but obviously, De Niro's current investments have several big-name chefs and brands in orbit, including Nobu, Tribeca Grill, and chef Andrew Carmellini (at Locanda Verde). According to Deadline, the massive project is slated to open in 2016.
