The Michelin Guide Kansai 2014 has been announced (the link is in Japanese). The guide covers the western Japanese regions of Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, and Nara. There are 14 three-stars, up from 12 last year. The two new three-stars are Mizai and Kichisen, both located in Kyoto. There are 51 two-stars, and a whopping 202 with the one-star designation. Kyoto boasts the bulk of the star distribution, though Osaka has the most one-star restaurants this year.

This is also the first year the guide has included Bib Gourmands, which indicate a "value-for-money restaurant, offering a menu or a single plate (depending on the restaurant's style) for under 5,000 yen." This year only French and Italian restaurants were included. 92 restaurants received a Bib Gourmand, with 40 being French and 52 being Italian.
