A just-launched smartphone app allows diners to pay their bill without even looking at the check. Mobile payment app Cover officially launched in New York City this week, with 16 participating restaurants: Users simply check-in at the restaurant (by creating their own "table" in the app) when seated, and order as usual. When it's time for the check, Cover pays the bill with your registered credit card, splitting the check evenly amongst all members of the party. The app's founders argue it creates a win-win: parties don't have to wait for their checks, while restaurants save money by using Cover's payment processing.
According to Eater NY, restaurants like Lure Fishbar, ZZ's Clam Bar, and Charlie Bird are currently participating (Cover's Beta phase, VentureBeat notes, lasted 10 months). The app is free and is currently available in the Apple store, with an Android version in the works.
