Just a couple days after word that Brooks Brothers is opening a New York City steakhouse, here's the latest in clothing retailers getting into the restaurant business: Saks Fifth Avenue has announced it is developing a signature restaurant, Sophie's, to open in a handful of store locations. Spanish chef Alexandro Reyes is behind the menu that a press release describes as "globally influenced yet decidedly American" in addition to being "nutritionally thoughtful." The restaurant is named for American fashion designer Sophie Gimbel, who Fifth Dining president Michael Kaufman describes as "a legendary New York hostess who cooked, gardened and canned her own fruits and vegetables."
The first Sophie's location will open in Chicago in January 2014 on the Magnificent Mile. And the New York Post reports it will replace the Cafe SFA on the 8th floor at the New York City flagship location in Summer 2014. More Sophie's locations are in the works for stores in Sarasota, Florida, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Architect Andre Kikoski — who has won many awards, including the James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurant Design — will be responsible for the Sophie's aesthetic.
