The Hipster Barista Finally Gets the Joke

Barista Dustin Mattson (of Octane Coffee in Atlanta) originally disliked that his photo was turned into the "Hipster Barista" meme, but it looks like he's warming up to his newfound internet fame. Last week on Facebook, the TV show Portlandia posted a custom-made Hipster Barista meme photo that read "I used cacao as my safe word / Before Portlandia" (it was in reference to a sexy-time segment from a season one episode of the show).

And Mattson approved, posting a screengrab to his Instagram and Twitter accounts, writing, "Baller status. I want to meet Fred and Carrie." A far cry from his original response last year, when he told Eater Atlanta, "I do find it discouraging and disappointing that there was so much exposure brought to an attempt at making a joke of a culinary industry and the professional barista."
