Summer is upon us and it's time to take a look at the food and drink events coming up this month and a bit beyond that. You'll find celebrity chef dinners, craft beer festivals, international summits, and crowd-pleasing staples, all of which are worth the drive or even a flight or two. The docket for June includes a dinner at Princeton's Elements Restaurant with chefs Michael Cimarusti and Scott Anderson, the Taste of London festival (featuring Wolfgang Puck and David Chang), the Institute of Food Technologists Expo in Las Vegas, and of course, the 30th anniversary Food & Wine Classic in Aspen.
Taste of the Nation
When: June 2012
Where: Multiple cities
What: These events are great: eat food from some of the best restaurants in the country while helping fight childhood hunger. This month they'll be making stops in Hollywood (June 10), Ithaca (June 19), Palm Beach (June 20), Portland, ME (June 24), Minneapolis (June 25), and Portsmouth, NH (June 27).
When: June 1 - June 10, 2012
Where: Berlin, Germany
What: This rather arty 10-day festival is currently underway in the German capital. It aims to focus on the overlap between contemporary design and gastronomy, with workshops, tastings, lectures, and exhibitions showcasing cutting edge designers and craftsmen.
Big Apple Barbecue Block Party
When: June 9 - June 10, 2012
Where: New York, New York
What: The restaurateur Danny Meyer's annual barbecue fest enters its 10th year this coming weekend. As is tradition, mobs of people will descend upon Manhattan's Madison Square Park for tastes of food from some of the greatest pit masters in the country, like Ed Mitchell and Scott Roberts. Prepare for lines, heat, and deliciousness.
Slow Food Chicago Pig Roast
When: June 10
What: Chefs from local restaurants like Sable Kitchen & Bar, Three Aces, and, very surprisingly, the vegetable-focused Green Zebra will do all sorts of wonderful things to Slagel Family Farm hogs throughout one afternoon.
Summer Guest Chef Series at Elements
When: June 10, 2012
Where: Princeton, NJ
What: The chef Scott Anderson kicked off a guest chef dinner series at his Princeton, New Jersey restaurant Elements last month. June will see one more feast, a collaboration with the seafood virtuoso Michael Cimarusti, of L.A. restaurant Providence.
Celebrity Chef Tour
When: June 13 and June 27
Where: Denver and New York
What: The Celebrity Chef Tour will make two stops this month. The first, on June 13, will be held in Denver, Colorado with chefs Amanda Cohen and Frank Bonanno. The second, on June 27, will be held in New York City at Tom Colicchio's Riverpark Restaurant. Participating in the latter will be Andrew Zimmern, Gavin Kaysen, Tim McKee, and others.
The Aspen Food & Wine Classic
When: June 15 - June 17, 2012
Where: Aspen, Colorado
What: One of the country's great food festivals, the Aspen Food & Wine Classic, will celebrate its 30th anniversary with pretty much every single big-name chef in the country. Also: a concert from Elvis Costello.
Taste of London
When: June 21 - 24, 2012
Where: London, England
What: For four days, London's Regent's Park will be packed with revelers stuffing their faces with food from some of that city's greatest restaurants. A number of chefs from abroad, like David Chang and Wolfgang Puck, will make appearances.
Charleston Beer Garden
When: June 23, 2012
Where: Charleston, South Carolina
What: If you find yourself in Charleston towards the end of the month, this relatively small but very neat festival seems like a good call. The one-day event showcases about ten craft breweries, will have music from local bands, and offerings from some of the best food trucks in the city. The fact that they've kept things somewhat measured means it won't be a swarmed shitshow.
Institute of Food Technologists Expo
When: June 25 - June 28, 2012
Where: Las Vegas, Nevada
What: Here's a geekier and more practical event: an expo aimed at showcasing "the newest trends, products, ingredients, and processing technologies" in food. It's a monster of a thing, with booths from different companies, seminars, and thousands of attendees.
When: July 1-2, 2012
Where: Copenhagen, Denmark
What: René Redzepi has released the names of the speakers for his second annual symposium in Copenhagen. Among those confirmed to present are Ferran Adrià, Wylie Dufresne, Massimo Bottura, Fergus Henderson, and Enrique Olvera. This year's symposium will center around the word "appetite," which "has been chosen due to its evocative meaning and fundamental importance to our work as chefs," according to Redzepi.
When: July 24 - July 28, 2012
Where: Mexico City
What: Taking inspiration from other food events and congresses around the world, the chef Enrique Olvera of the acclaimed restaurant Pujol is organizing a five-day festival to shine a light on the stars of Mexico's food scene. There will also be presentations from American and European chefs, with a lineup announcement soon to come.
