Washington Post critic Tom Sietsema took to Twitter yesterday afternoon with a blind item seemingly calling out one of DC's former Top Cheftestapants. Sietsema writes: "That not-so-top chef opening restaurants left and right? Even his closest food pals are leaving their plates full @ his operations."
To whom is Sietsema referring? Well, Eater DC notes that the tweet came just minutes after Sietsema linked to a preview of Mike Isabella's new restaurant Bandolero — Isabella's second restaurant to open within the year, with two more on the way. But the preview was mostly positive, as was Sietsema's review for Isabella's first restaurant, Graffiato. So perhaps Isabella is in the clear?
Still others point out that Mendelsohn's just doing burgers and pies and Sietsema's tweet suggests a sit-down restaurant. These commenters suggest perhaps Bryan Voltaggio, who is opening his third Maryland restaurant later this month with another one in the works for DC. Then again, Volt is still getting stellar reviews, so another commenter floats the idea that perhaps the Top Chef reference was a red herring — might it just be a DC chef who is unconnected to the show?
Either way, one takeaway here is that DC's cheftestapants are all opening a whole lot of new projects right now.
