Beginning on Monday, in this very space, we'll announce the 50 Eater Young Guns finalists, a group that represents the best of the best of the more than 2,000 nominations we received over the last two months. The only real question is: Are you ready?
As perhaps we've made clear by now, Young Guns aims to identify the most promising up-and-comers in the restaurant and nightlife world, whether they're working as chefs or line cooks, wine and drinks pros, restaurateurs, or maître d's. The criteria are simple. Nominees must be under 30 years of age (or have worked in their chosen field for less than five years) and must be currently employed in the hospitality industry in the United States. They must show extraordinary promise.
And so, our nominations committee is hard at work on determining those final 50. Some will be complete unknowns and others perhaps have enjoyed a tiny whiff of public attention already. All will have distinguished themselves both in the eyes of other chefs and customers. You'll meet the next Restaurant Men and Women, future James Beard Best Chefs, the sommeliers that will define wine drinking in the decade to come, and perhaps even one or two folks that are currently working in a lab. Starting on Monday, we'll present profiles of many of the 50, including recommendations from the committee, video profiles, and much more. And on June 25, three weeks hence, our Young Guns Class of 2012 will be unveiled. It's time.
