Nathan Myhrvold's mega expensive megacookbook Modernist Cuisine has brought in about $20 million in sales, according to the Wall Street Journal. The book has sold about 45,000 copies — in its English, German, Spanish and French translations — and retails for about $450 on Amazon.
Of course, the guy employed a team of "36 scientists, chefs, editors and photographers researching for three years" to write the thing, and you know, anti-griddles aren't cheap, so $20 million doesn't necessarily make the thing profitable. Still, Myhrvold tells the WSJ "I'm thrilled with our sales" and that more translations are on their way, so who knows how many they'll end up selling.
