Here is a great thing some New Orleans chefs are doing for Hurricane Sandy victims: On Saturday, chefs such as August's Michael Gulotta and Donald Link of the Link Restaurant Group are headed to Far Rockaway, New York, to serve lunch in this community that was devastated in the storm. This is all part of the city's Pay It Forward initiative, which seeks to assist hurricane victims given New Orleans' own history — and is currently seeking donations, if you are so inclined.
The participating chefs — along including Freddie McKnight (Drago's), Greg Reggio (Zea, Semonlina, Taste Buds), Stephen Stryjewski (Cochon Restaurant) and Mark Uddo (Country Day) — will be cooking about 1,000 meals for the people of the Rockaways. The menu, of course, is New Orleans staples such as "seafood gumbo, jambalaya, shrimp pasta, white beans stew, shrimp and grits, and more," per a press release, and the Stooges Brass Band and Mayor Mitch Landrieu will also be on hand.
