The 2011 Jell-O Mold Competition went down on Saturday, and just like last year's, the hipsters were sweaty, the Jell-O shots and cans of PBR were plentiful, and the Jell-O mold sculptures gently wobbled as Jell-O is wont to do.
· This time students from the Cooper-Hewitt Design Scholars Program participated, and they brought their A-game. See the Esprell-O (winner in the "Aesthetics" category) and Dentures (winner in the "People's Choice" AND "Structural Integrity" categories) pieces.
· A work of note was "Jell-Obama," a bust of President Barack Obama inspired by his "favorite" candy, salted caramel. A Jell-O version of salted caramels were also on offer, featuring caramel sauce (made with Bailey's and Godiva Liquer) encapsulated inside chocolate pudding.
· Bonus points to NYC Resistor for their piece, "The Resistor Jeltone," a playable musical instrument that passed electric currents through the Jell-O keyboard.
· Also: Jeckers by Anney Fresh: Jell-O shot checkers. On taking an opponent's checker, you decide whether you or they do a Jell-O shot. That could lead to trouble.
