What with all the tip jar stealing and xenophobic mandatory tipping going on in America, it's not surprising that some argue for getting rid of it. But maybe it serves a purpose? Australian writer John Birmingham was so impressed with the service he experienced on a recent trip to New York that he suggests maybe implementing the system in Australia.
On the other hand, Steve Dublanica wrote in his book Keep the Change that "Any waiter whose IQ hasn't been lowered by alcohol and Quaaludes will tell you that there's no rhyme or reason as to why some customers tip and others don't." So, is that 20% tip the motivation behind great service or not?
