Danny Meyer Headed to DC's Nationals Park in a Big Way

New, 2 comments

New York restaurateur Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group is set to open up shop in Washington DC's Nationals Park stadium in a big, big way: The company is opening four concepts, including a Blue Smoke (barbecue) and a Shake Shack (hamburgers, hot dogs, frozen custard). This follows the recent news that Five Guys closed its Nationals Park location after a three-year stint because the ballpark didn't offer the company another contract.

The two others concepts for Nationals Park stadium — Box Frites ("Belgian-style fries and dipping sauces") and El Verano Taqueriaare duplicated from the New York Mets' home, Citi Field.

Last year USHG announced they'd be opening a Shake Shack in DC's Dupont Circle district, so that means DC will have two Shake Shacks to call its very own.

The Washington Nationals have partnered with world-renowned restaurateur Danny Meyer and his Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG) to bring Nationals fans a winning array of culinary offerings at the Miller Lite Scoreboard Walk, the Nationals Park hot spot that hosts the popular Miller Lite Party Nights every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.

Upon opening in late spring of 2011, Nationals fans will enjoy a variety of delicious new menu offerings, including mouthwatering real pit barbecue from Blue Smoke, addictive Belgian-style fries and dipping sauces at Box Frites, authentic Mexican food and flavors at El Verano Taquería, and ShackBurgers, hot dogs and frozen custard from the popular Shake Shack. This multi-year agreement makes Nationals Park the third sports venue in the nation to offer USHG’s beloved cuisine, joining Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, and New York Racing Association’s Saratoga Race Course.

“It’s exciting to partner with a highly acclaimed restaurateur whose offerings add such a unique culinary atmosphere to Nationals Park,” Nationals Chief Operating Officer Andrew C. Feffer said. “This is yet another step the Nationals are taking to enhance the excellent food service experience already created by Levy Restaurants here at Nationals Park.”

Located on the Club Level behind the Main Scoreboard, the Miller Lite Scoreboard Walk offers fans an elevated view of the field while enjoying pregame music, drink specials and now, an exceptional combination of dining choices available only at Nationals Park. These new offerings allow USHG to showcase its celebrated cuisine and unparalleled hospitality at Nationals games and other functions throughout the year at Nationals Park.

“My colleagues and I are incredibly excited to introduce Blue Smoke, Shake Shack, El Verano Taquería and Box Frites to our Nation’s Capital,” said Danny Meyer, Chief Executive Officer of Union Square Hospitality Group. “As lifetime baseball enthusiasts, we’re eager to serve legions of Nationals fans some of the best in ballpark eats, and to further enhance the fantastic experience of the Miller Lite Scoreboard Walk.”

The new USHG outposts at Nationals Park are scheduled to open just as the company debuts its first Shake Shack in Washington, DC. The city’s inaugural Shake Shack will be centrally located in the vibrant Dupont Circle neighborhood just a few blocks away from the Dupont Circle Metro station. The Dupont Circle Shack is also planning to open in late spring.
