Restaurants Offer Dining Discounts But Want Tips in Full

Did you know that if you that if you use one of Blackboard Eats' daily coupons — the ones that now cost $1/deal — you get an email reminding you that "Tips must be based on the pre-discount total."

And at the Brooklyn restaurant Dressler, waiters slip a not-so-subtle reminder in the form of a card along with the check to remind diners exactly what the tip should be based on the "pre-discount total."

Aren't tips generally calculated based on the check total? If the owner of a restaurant is offering some form of a discount, why is there an expectation that the diner should tip based on the original, non-discounted price?
