The rumors were true: Starbucks announced today that it acquired Evolution Fresh — a premium juice brand sold in West Coast supermarkets — for $30 million in cash. The original rumor was that Starbucks was going to divide coffee shops make "one half a pressed juice ‘grab and go’ bar."
But the Seattle-based coffee chain is going all out: The plan is to launch a new national "health and wellness retail concept" with the goal to "redefine the super-premium juice category and experience for consumers unlike any prior existing juice retail." So basically: fancy juice bars selling yoga mats and bullshit herbal remedies? The new chain is slated to launch in 2012.
