At least six people, all between the ages of 70 and 95, choked to death eating the traditional Japanese New Year's rice cakes called mochi. This apparently happens every year, and the fire department issues warnings for children and the elderly; there is concern that as Japan's population ages, New Year's mochi-chokings will become a bigger problem.
