The nominations for the 31st Annual Emmy Awards for News & Documentary were announced today, and there were a few food-related nominations: PBS' "Worldfocus" was nominated in the "Outstanding Feature Story in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast" category for their February 2008 segment "Haiti: Mud Cookies" in which, as the title implies, poor Haitians eat cookies made of mud (see the video). Planet Green was nominated in the "Outstanding Nature Programming" category for their documentary "The Last Beekeeper" and the Travel Channel and Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations for "Outstanding Promotional Announcement: Institutional" (so for like commercials?).
And CHOW.com was nominated in the "New Approaches to News & Documentary Programming: Arts, Lifestyle & Culture" category for their mini-documentary "Obsessives: Soda Pop", about John Nese, the proprietor of Galco's Soda Pop Stop in Los Angeles that specializes in fizzy drinks from independent and small-batch soda makers. A fountain of knowledge, the man knows his stuff!
If you haven't watched it, you should! It's a really, really great 13 minutes:
