Chef and Top Chef judge Tom Colicchio appeared before the House Education & Labor Committee to support a reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act that would increase the funding for school meals. Colicchio spoke of his role as chef, business owner, parent, and son of a lunch lady. His mother, Beverly Colicchio, cooked lunch at a high school in Elizabeth, New Jersey, for 20 years: "Often the meals she served those kids was the only food they got all day."
Colicchio is not new to the issue of childhood nutrition; this past winter he announced that, along with Mario Batali, he is producing a documentary directed by his wife Lori Silverbush called Hunger in America.
