Preachers' daughter Katy Perry teased the video for her new song "California Gurls." According to the weltanschauung, tits are candy, girls be randy, and Snoop Dogg is some sort of god-like puppet master sitting on a cotton candy cotton cloud playing cardboard Monopoly with the lives of Daisy Duked nymphettes. Oh, and then of course, the most important part of this California world: girls' tits come icing. But that's not the most confusing part.
So according to Perry, she changed the name from the conventional spelling to this modified one in tribute to Alex Chilton, the late great singer of Big Star. I bet Alex Chilton is up there next to Snoop in Heaven, off-camera, saying, "I'm honored but no thanks. No. Really. Don't. Girls is fine. I like Girls. Why go with Gurls? Stick with Girls."
Secondly, the song is an answer toJay-Z's Empire State of Mind? The latter's lyrics include, not that it's James Merrill or anything but, "8 million stories, out there in it naked/City is a pity, half of y'all won't make it," which might reference Jules Dessin and Tribe Called Quest. Versus
Perry isn't doing California any favors.
