Yesterday White House Food Initiative Coordinator Sam Kass lead a tour of the White House Garden for a group of agricultural journalists who were in town for a convention. While he revealed some interesting facts about the garden and its future — it's expanding from 1,100 square feet to 1,500 square feet! They're going to grow tomatoes! — he mentioned that the garden is not certified organic. While it's true that the greens and veggies are nurtured without the use of synthetic fertilizer or pesticides, the White House has never bothered to go through the process of organic certification, because according to Kass,“I just don’t think it’s necessary in this context.”
