Stephen Starr Nabs Sasha Patraske for Mexican Spot, El Rey

New, 2 comments

Philly-area mega-restaurateur Stephen Starr has tapped one of the titans of New York mixology, Sasha Petraske, for the bar program at his new Mexican concept, El Rey. Petraske made a name for himself designing the cocktails at NYC hotspots Milk and Honey and Dutch Kills.

A few weeks ago, Starr mentioned that he wanted El Rey to have a "speakeasy vibe", so hiring Petraske makes total sense. Keeping with this theme, the bar section of El Rey will be located in the back of the space and will even have its own entrance. So, there you go. Stephen Starr is opening a speakeasy. El Rey is slated to open at the end of April in a space that formerly housed a greasy spoon.

UPDATE: We've got some intel from within Stephen Starr HQ. Petraske won't be working on the El Rey cocktail program, but he will be consulting on another, yet-to-be-named cocktail lounge that will be in the annex of the El Rey space. El Rey will, however, still have an awesome beverage program, filled with fresh squeezed juice drinks and lots of California and South American beers and wines. So, yes, we still got a Starr-Speakeasy, but it is not El Rey. [Eaterwire]
