The Critics

Diner's Journal reports that restaurant critic Raymond Sokolov is leaving the Wall Street Journal after four years on the job. Sokolov says that his editor told him that the paper was abandoning reviews, and asked him to focus on food trends instead, an offer which he declined. Says the critic: “I’m just a freelance writer who had a recurring assignment that was abruptly changed... and the new one was not for me. We certainly parted amicably." Curiously, the director of communications for the WSJ said that the paper would in fact continue restaurant reviews, but declined to offer any specifics on the future of their coverage.
