New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg asked for federal permission to prevent New York City's food stamp recipients from using them to buy soda or other sugary drinks. The New York Times reported the the mayor asked the USDA for "a ban for two years to study whether it would have a positive impact on health and whether a permanent ban would be merited."
It's an attempt to curb obesity and diabetes — in the past New York has run series of anti-soda food scold advertising and failed to add a tax soda.
