So the October 2010 issue of Saveur magazine is a thing to behold. At first we rolled our eyes: 25 Greatest Meals Ever! Not another silly listicle format to loosely connect to some recipes, we thought. (Yes, we're jaded like that.) Leave it to Saveur to melt our icy hearts, though. It's actually 25 essays about great or memorable meals from well-known writers, critics, chefs, and the like, including Jane and Michael Stern, Madhur Jaffrey, Gabrielle Hamilton, Gael Greene, Sarah DiGregorio, Martha Stewart, Dean Koontz, and Monique Truong. Bizarrely, Heston Blumenthal's piece is not available on Saveur's website.
The online presentation leaves a lot to be desired, as the articles don't link to the related recipes (hopefully Helen Rosner will fix that soon). But the print version is handsomely and boldly designed — with a saucy glazed pork chop centerfold, no less — and is definitely worth picking up.
