The Economist pens a column on the myriad similarities of America's two most internationally-renowned restaurants: The French Laundry and McDonald's. Both establishments offer parting gifts (Happy Meal toys or wooden laundry pins ), offer set menus, serve impressive pommes frites, use a variety of salts, and encourage "cheerful, unpretentious service."
