When he’s not putting an end to childhood obesity, playing matchmaker, and making jewel thieves come clean, Jamie Oliver likes opening restaurants. Lots of restaurants. Just a few months ago, we learned that Oliver was looking for $22 million to open 30 Italian restaurants in China. While that chain is still in the works, news broke yesterday that Oliver has plans for a new restaurants chain, a southern-style BBQ joint that he is opening with with NYC pit master and one-time Daniel Boulud protege, Adam Perry Lang.
The first location of the yet-unnamed, 200-seat restaurant will open this October in a new entertainment complex in London, with proposed sites in Dublin, Berlin, Capetown, and, Dubai in the works. The menu will not only feature the American style BBQ that is the speciality at Lang’s Manhattan restaurant, Daisy May’s BBQ, but also Brazilian-style charcoal pit churrasco.
Oliver is the first big get for the one billion dollar One New Change entertainment complex, which plans to attract an estimated seven million visitors a year. Says Jamie of his new restaurant:
“The combination of what I know will be incredible food and our awesome location will mean visitors will have the most exquisite dining experience.”Right now, Oliver currently has eleven restaurants open, seven of which are branches of Jamie’s Italian, four of which are franchises of his flagship restaurant, 15. If you include the new branches of Jamie’s Italian that Oliver has planned for England, plus the ones planned for China, and the BBQ joints announced yesterday, that leads to a grand total of 39 restaurants in the works.
No word yet on whether or not Oliver’s love of BBQ was inspired by his recent stay in West Virginia.
