Not unlike the 37th president himself, Nixon's resignation lunch looks sad on camera. Gaze at the carefully arranged wedges of pale yellow (canned?) pineapple surrounding a single, precious dollop of cottage cheese. Admire the austere glass of milk, the White House china, and opulent silver platter. Taken August 8, 1974, by White House photographer Robert Knudson just prior to Nixon's announcement that he would step down from office, the snapshot captures the president's preferred mid-day meal.
NPR researchers sifting through documents related to cottage cheese discovered the image. Apparently it's very unorthodox for a presidential photo because it focuses on a meal rather than a person. Nixon, like the rest of America at the time, was a huge fan of cottage cheese and can be heard ordering the snack multiple times on the infamous tapes that also resulted in his demise. Meanwhile, current POTUS Barack Obama can't get enough pie, barbecue, and seafood.
