Counterfeit wine is a big problem, and connoisseurs are spending untold amounts of money on fake bottles. The latest episode of Food Crimes, the online video series from Zero Point Zero (Bourdain's production company) and Food Republic, focuses on the issue. Food Crimes examines how fake wine is created, brought to market, and abetted by the "small, insular nature of the craft."
The episode takes a hard look at Hardy Rodenstock and Rudy Kurniawan two of the most notorious counterfeiters from the 1980s and mid-2000s, respectively. While Kurniawan is serving prison time for his exploits, industry insiders fear there's much more fake wine on the market than anyone realizes.
