Andrew Zimmern, Travel Channel's most intrepid reporter, is noshing on bugs again, but this time it's the Netherlands. On the next episode of Bizarre Foods, he visits a Dutch company called Kreca that is transforming crickets and larvae — which, from a distance, look like plump grains of rice — into sweet, salty, and savory snacks. Zimmern, who has eaten insects all over the world, thinks it's a brilliant plan. Insects multiply quickly, are easy to process, and in the right quantities supply the human body with high quality protein. But will people ever get over the "ew" factor of eating creepy, crawly bugs?
Also in this episode Zimmern tastes smoked local eel and hollow pig head, noting "the city's nonconformity in every bite."
Bizarre Foods: "Amsterdam: Squealing Eels & Stroopwafels" airs tonight, Tuesday, November 17 at 8:00 p.m. on Travel Channel.
